Steve's Stones took a year off from the Doernbecher Charity Auction to regroup a little bit. In some ways the results of our efforts in 2005 were a dissapointment. Especially with regards to the fine pendant set that was the combined efforts of myself and Steve Douglas. This item did not meet reserve price so I sent it back with Steve to display in his store. Imagine my surprise when I picked up my mail and found a check made out to Doernbecher from the sale of the pendant. Turns out that a couple from Connecticut bought this unique item for their anniversary! I now have the privelege of delivering a check in the amount of $1,600 to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Another year has passed without us needing their services but it sure is a comfort knowing they are there in case we do. Ashley has been doing well and we pray that continues. Plans are underway for an auction item for 2007. At this point I am not sure if it will be for the Portland Oregon auction or for the one locally here in Douglas County. Inspiration will strike I am sure.

Well, here is the reason Steve's Stones became involved with "Friends of Doernbecher". Ironically, on my return from the Portland Auction my daughter Ashley became ill again early Sunday morning. Monday, she and my wife traveled to Portland and Ashley was admitted. Following tests on tuesday surgery was performed and a new shunt placed. Without Doernbecher I don't know what we would do. Ashley, the smile you gave me at post-op was a very special gift. I'll remember it forever. Hurry home. I love you, Papa.(chin wave)

Steve's Stones is proud to be able to support Doernbecher Childrens Hospital. Each year a unique jewelry item is auctioned off to support this organization. The funds raised at "Friends of Doernbecher" auctions go a long way in the lives of the children this hospital treats.We are the proud parents of a "Doernbecher Miracle" ourselves and in a small way this allows us to express our gratitude and perhaps help another child and family. Special thanks to Dust Devil Mining, without their help this endeavor would not be possible. Their genorous donation of facet rough each year and coordination of the artists involved are a real blessing. Also MANY THANKS to the artists and jewelers that combine their gifts and talents to make all of this come together.

Well, the Portland, Oregon 2005 Auction is History. An evening to remember. Seems like when you take the "boy out of the country" there is bound to be problems. My initial plan was to bring my travel trailer up and stay in it rather than a motel for cost considerations. The address listed where I was going to park it was in the 200 series. Little did I know this meant the intersection of this address and "200ish" street. I drove for a LONG ways looking at the numbers on the buildings and finally asked for directions. Talk about the wrong end of town!! Arrangements were made to leave my RV at a different location and off to downtown Portland I went. Numerous wrong turns ect I was finally faced with the dilema of where to park. Another problem with it's own unique qualities!! Eventually I entered the Governors Hotel and began the evening. Not wanting to commit a social faux pas my pictures are few in number and were taken early in the evening. ( I still wound up using the wrong fork) The event featured an Oriental theme complete with Dragon Dancers, decorations , cuisine (not just food here folks) and even a cup of sake. The live auction began after dinner and featured many unique items. The auction item that was presented by myself and co-artists sold for $5,000. The buyer of this piece really got a sweet deal. (appraisal $11,845). The funds raised by this amount can really impact the life of a child. The 2005 Portland Oregon Auction Item is completed. This piece features the work of Karla Brom Proud and Dalan Hargrave. Karla is executive director of Exotic Gemstones,Honolulu HI. and is the concept designer of this piece. Dalan Hargrave is owner and operator of GemStarz Jewelry, Spring Branch Texas and is the fabricating artist and goldsmith. Both of these artists have been recognized in the trade with numerous awards from the American Gem Trade Association and other guild related orders. Gemstone faceting by Steve Ewens of Steve's Stones. This piece of jewelery excells in it's originality and use of materials. The center stone is a 10.7ct Oregon Sunstone accented with channel set diamonds and set in white and yellow gold. The chain is handmade of white and yellow gold and adds a unique sense of style and balance to the piece. Strikingly elegant, this fine piece is scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder October 22nd 2005. The 2005 Douglas County Auction Item is again a one of a kind item. This pendant and earring set features the unique engraving style of Steve Douglas. Three Oregon Sunstones with a total ct weight of 8.67 cts have been chosen as the featured gems. Gemstones faceted by Steve Ewens of Steve's Stones. A wonderful combination of traditional and cutting edge design. This fine piece was presented for auction August 26th at Seven Feathers Convention Center and Casino. The reserve price was not met and the set is currently being offered for sale at Douglas Fine Jewelry with proceeds going to benefit Doernbechers.
